1. Self-introduction

I am an undergraduate student at Osaka University, Faculty of Medicine. Currently, I am a member of Public Health Laboratory in Osaka University. I graduated from The University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering, and subsequently enrolled at Osaka University. I am planning to be a researcher in the interdisciplinary field between information engineering and medicine.

I participated in Campus Asia program to develop my research skills and consider the future research direction through practice in Yonsei University.

I participated in research activities in two laboratories in the program.

2. Practice in the Preventive Medicine

I worked on an epidemiological study under Professor Kim. I analyzed the association between diabetes and psychiatric disorders before and after COVID-19, using Korean cross-sectional data called KNHANES. There were many difficulties in conducting the analysis. For example, it was hard to understand the contents of the survey because the summary materials of the survey were written in Korean. However, I was able to solve the problems thanks to the support of the surrounding people. Unfortunately, I could not conduct in-depth analysis because of the short period of practice. However, I learned many things from exchanging opinions with the professor.

3. Practice in the Biomedical Systems Informatics

Under Professor You, I learned about how to create AI models and how to conduct AI research. Using dermatological data, I created a predictive model using random forests and logistic regression. I had studied AI to some extent when I was in the Faculty of Engineering. However, I had never studied how to proceed with AI research, so it was a great learning experience. I am strongly interested in medical AI. Therefore, I will make use of this experience in my future research activities.

4. Cultural experience

I had two opportunities to experience Korean culture during my stay.

The first one was a visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace and the National Folk Museum. Gyeongbokgung is a palace of the Joseon Dynasty. There are many buildings in the park, all of which are very beautiful. At the National Folk Museum, I learned about traditional Korean culture, daily life, and history.

The second one was a visit to the National Palace Museum and the Namsan Hanok Village. In the village, I saw traditional Korean houses and gardens.

5. Tutor meeting

During my three-week stay, I had several meals with my tutors. I enjoyed many Korean dishes during this time. We exchanged our opinions regarding our hobbies, cultures of each other's countries, and our future plans. I was so motivated for the future through interaction with the tutors.

6. Korean Language Class

During my three-week stay, I took some Korean language classes at Korean Language Academy. I had almost no skills when I started to learn Korean. Since the class time was very short, I was only able to study up to the elementary level. However, I enjoyed learning Korean because the teacher kindly taught me the new knowledge for me. Now that I am interested in the Korean language, I am going to continue to study it in Japan.

7. Conclusion

Through this program, I learned many things.

Firstly, I realized the importance of international cooperation. For example, the amount of data is very important in developing AI, and I believe that cooperation among many research institutions will lead to better research outcomes.

Secondly, I realized the importance of language skills. I communicated with people there mainly in English. However, I often had trouble conveying what I wanted to say. I would like to improve my language skills.

I would like to thank the many people who supported me during my stay.

감사합니다!
